Respect for our clients email addresses

Many of us who have email news letters, ezines or sign up pages on our web sites go to a lot of effort to reassure our clients and contacts that we do not and will not share their email addresses.
However I am constantly exasperated when people don’t think to apply that same care when sending emails out – this usually happens when people don’t have an auto-responder or are sending out an ad hoc email.
Just this week, my email address has been widely published in no less that 5 emails that were sent far and wide.
If you are like me, you probably have several email addresses – for business and personal use. It is after all my intellectual property, my personal collateral.
When I sign up for a news letter, I don’t always want to provide my business email – it’s my way of protecting my business email account from unwanted spam in case people do ever pass on my details.
So if you are sending an email out to your friends, business contacts or clients, please, please, PLEASE just spend a moment to think if it is OK to show all the addresses in the email. Better still send your email as a blind copy (bcc) which you can easily do using your email address list.
I am sure your contacts will appreciate you taking care of their collateral and keeping your promise not to share their email address with others.
