Blogs give us a window to other peoples worlds

Growing up we were never far from the sea. In fact most of my life has been spent withing 30 minutes of the ocean wherever I have lived in Europe, North America and Asia.
These days I am regularly either near Dalkey or Howth harbours and the smell of the sea always takes me back to my childhood where we would spend time at Seahouses, Craster, Amble and many other small fishing villages in Northumberland.
This week as I walked past the Howth Coastguard Station little did I realise that inside someone blogging – until I came across their blog on the Irish Blog Awards site.
I would highly recommend you taking a look at the Howth Coastguard blog and see how they use their blog to communicate their role and how they are in service to their community.
Yes it’s not strictly a business blog, but if you are wondering what a blog can do for you in building awareness of what you do and keep your clients, customers and patients (and in the case of Howth Coastguard Station the general public) up to speed on your work then it is a great example.
You can access insight from behind the stone walls of Howth Coastguard Station what it’s like to be a volunteer there. Yes volunteers – let me quote from their blog:
“Howth is one of 54 Coast Guard Coastal Units around the coast of the Republic of Ireland crewed by a total of 950 male and female volunteers. All Units are operated totally by local crews (including Howth) who give freely of their valuable time and effort to the Coast Guard, local community and ‘those in peril on the sea’, cliffs and coasts of Ireland. Training is provided for the volunteers, and these are available on-call, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.”
The Howth Coastguard blog certainly inspired me today.
Thank you to the team at Howth for providing us with an opportunity to look into your world and of course all the other Coastguard stations across the globe who protect us on the shorelines and at sea.
