One web site or two?

PC_monitor.jpgI often get people look at me amazed that I have more than one web site.

“Isn’t that difficult to maintain?”  “Why on earth would you do that?” Are some of the questions I have been asked.

Yes, traditionally many professional services firms have thought that one web site for a business is sufficient.

However, over the years it’s been tested by experts that a web site with a simple call to action makes it easier for people to respond to that rather than having to scan through the “clutter” that they see on a detailed corporate site.

I have my main web site for my business, a web portal that promotes mypersonal brand on line promotes me as a speaker, a web site for the podcasts for my radio show, a web site for the weekly interviews with business development experts and my blog.

Yes they do take time to nurture – no matter what people tell you, building a strong brand and magnetic on-line presence takes time – don’t invest in those get rich quick on the internet as the people selling them are the only people getting rich!

So here are some ideas for considering if you need another web site:

  • Are you the author of a book?
  • Have you got a distinctive proposition that is outside your usual services?
  • Are you marketing to a different niche?

You see when people visit you, they want to immediatey understand what problems you can solve for them.  So a clear call to action for them to repond to is critical.

If you provide solutions to different target markets, you will not be able to write copy that is as clear and compeling to them if you serve everyone.

You can optimise your web site to increase traffic to your web page by making sure you have a search engine marketing programme with the key words relevant to that target market and your solution.

And an additional benefit is that you can develop inbound and outbound links to your other web sites withis is another great search marketing strategy.

In fact my recommendation is to create multiple blogs as they are even easier to maintain and nurture – if only I could find someone who was great and cost effective in really sharp design on wordpress …… let me know if you have a recommendation of someone.

In the meantime, consider how clear your web site is in encouraging vistors to take action and if you too need a separate web site.
