Express your personal brand online – networking on “My Space”

A key business delelopment strategy for success is building and nurturing our network both offline and online.
Yesterday we had some family friends over for lunch and one of them John, was commenting on the fact that in their business (which is in the area of SMS messaging services for businesses) they were noticing a reduction in text messaging as people were using Bebo and My Space to connect online rather than by text.
I have been a member of the online LinkedIn which I really trust as an online networking tool as I only invite and respond to invitations to join networks of people that I truly do recommend to others.
My forthcoming book “Connect to Success” is all about networking to expand your professional success and I cover both online and offline networking, so as part of my research for the book, I’ve decided to explore some additional online networks this year including My Space and Ecademy.
This afternoon I created my own My Space profile that you can view here. They even have an integrated blog which I have not yet posted to.
They also have a feature to add music to your profile – I looked for music by Andrew Gold the songwriter (yes I am giving away my age) and guess what – he’s got his own My Space profile! My only question now is how to add his music to my profile.
The My Space online FAQ’s left a lot of my questions unanswered so I’ve sent a list of questions to the My Space customer service team.
I’d be interested to know of any strategies you have employed for using My Space to develop your business and any tips and techniques that you have found have been of benefit in building your My Space profile and online personal brand.
Or have you built your profile to express your personal brand on My Space purely to make sure that is someone searches for you they will find you?
As with all networking strategies, building my profile and spending time on My Space will need to be purposeful and well managed – otherwise I could spend mose of 2007 in online communities and my plans for business growth will be far from realised!
Update 3 January 2007: I just came across a timely article authored by Stephan Spencer on Marketing Profs about marketing on My Space which you can access here which you might find of interest if you too are exploring building your profile on My Space.
