Here is a summary of news and articles from around the web that has caught my attention in this week’s social media digest.

  • The Irish Sunday Business Post featured dbTwang, a new social media site based in Ireland, who are currently looking fr investors. The site is for guitar enthusiasts whose ambitions are to have 700,000 registered users and generate turnover of €3 million within five years with their business model being a combination of sponsorship and recurring monthly subscriptions, initially focusing on the US and Japan.
  • Microsoft research indicates that the theory that we all connected to each other by only 6 degrees of separation may be more accurate than some people thought. A US study of instant messaging suggests the theory that it takes only six steps to link everyone may be right – though seven seems more accurate. The researchers studied the addresses of 30bn instant messages sent during a single month in 2006 and found that any two people on average were linked by seven or fewer acquaintances.
  • You can personalise your news with socialmedian – join a News Network on each of your favourite topics and get a feed of what people like you are finding interesting. Thanks to David Petherick who shared this resource with me.
  • Are you an author and looking for ideas to market your book. Denise Wakeman reached out to her friends and contacts on Twitter to research that question and you can find their collective responses here (including mine).
  • Found yourself challenged with writing a proposal – then why not reach out to your social network to help you? That is what Robin Blandford has done. He openly posts his application for Seedcamp whose goal it is to support Europe’s next generation of entrepreneurs on his blog and his network provide him with feedback.
  • So many times I find my clients are not clear about who their product or service is relevant for – they have a product to market but no market for their product. if that’s you then why not read the new FREE ebook by authors Craig Stull, Phil Myers, and one of my favourite marketing authors David Meerman Scott. It can be accessed HERE. It is based on their new book ‘Tuned In‘ and if you want to read additional articles why not visit their blog.
  • And as we are getting used to microblogging in just 140 characters, Rajesh Setty suggests we should write stories as mini sagas of exactly 50 words in length – what he calles ‘Bite Sized Lessons For Life and Business’- read examples of mini saga’s here.
