Burson Marsteller Social Media Use in the Fortune 100

Posted by: | Posted on: October 19th, 2009 | 12 Comments | Posted in: Research, Social media

The adoption of social media by the Fortune 100 companies was recently researched by Burson Marsteller.
In summary the research found that:
  • 54% of companies were using Twitter
  • 32% of companies had a blog
  • 29% of companies are using Facebook.
Of the companies only using one social media platform, 76% of them were using Twitter, 14% were using Facebook and 10% had a blog.

Of the companies using two social media platforms, 64% used a blog and Twitter and 36% are using Facebook and Twitter.

The research identified that Twitter is being used primarily:
  • to distribute news and updates abut the company (94%)
  • as part of their customer service programme (67%)
  • to announce marketing promotions (57%)
  • for recruitment of staff (11%).
This research doesn’t cover the use of social media inside the organisation but does provide a helpful overview of the trends of adoption of social media in large organisations. In Ireland I am noticing more organisations set up Twitter accounts and Facebook pages – especially in relation to consumer products. Business blogging on the other-hand is a still is still a platform to be adopted more readily by SME’s than large corporates.

What are your preferred social media platforms for your organisation?
