Online video: review of eCorpTV.com – a site exclusively for business videos

With the ever increasing use of online video as a communication and marketing tool, many people think that YouTube is THE platform that they should consider and use. While YouTube videos are definitely ranking high in search  engine results, it’s not the only channel that I would recommend.

Increasingly there are a number of online video platforms that are relevant for niche communities and interests.

I was delighted to hear about a service I had not come across earlier today from a good friend of mine Winnie Anderson (a great copywriter should you need one). She directed me to a community called eCorpTV.com who focus on the business community. So I decided to test out the service.

Firstly it is free and easy to use – once you have logged into the site then you can upload a video and designate up to three channels relevant to the video to appear in.

I uploaded a video I had recorded almost a year ago about how to get started on Twitter – you can see a screen capture of it below.

ecorptv - online video channel

As with many free services, you will find that the site hosts Google adverts obviously as a way of it being able to offer the service for free.

A couple of things to watch however:

1.  make sure that you take a note of your log in details – I didn’t receive the customary email with my registration details

2.  check the details of your copy that you se to promote your video – unlike on services like YouTube, I could not find any way of amending the details after the video had uploaded.

You can make the video private or public and if you make it public others can access a direct link or embed code for your video – there are also buttons to enable sharing across other social networks including Twitter and Facebook.

The eCorpTV.com blog comments that companies using the site for a number of different communication goals from sales and marketing, to product promotion and tutorials, customer education, talent recruitment, public relations, and staff training.

The article on the eCorpTV.com blog goes on to comment:

Business focus is maintained through the eCorpTV professional screening process that ensures each video submitted scores highly in one of the following key categories: information, demonstration, education/consulting, innovation, interaction or involvement and tasteful commercialism/ advertising. This screening, by additionally reviewing quality of content and integrity of the community, means that as few as 5% of the videos submitted to the site are actually posted on it. In fact, in November 2009 more than 11,400 submissions were received by eCorpTV.com while only 568 made the cut.

I would recommend your check out the service if you are publishing online videos that meet the above criteria – one of the benefits I think you might get is from the segmentation of videos by geographic location and with the site still being in it’s infancy, it could provide you with a unique leverage and online visibility opportunity.

If you have used eCorpTV.com what has been your experience? And if you are publishing online videos for a business audience which other sites do you recommend?

If you do have questions about creating and distributing online video as part of your marketing and communications programme, remember just post them to our Facebook page or leave a comment and I’ll ensure that they get answered in a future blog post, podcast or online video.

Hi Krishna. The concept seems well conceived and I particularly like the fact that they review the video’s before posting. Reach is obviously much smaller than YouTube – but maybe for focussed messages this is no bad thing. Will you use both do you think longer term?

Barney – thanks for sharing your view. You might have noticed that I keep testing out new things and then exploring how they work to select the relevant platforms for my clients and myself. Interestingly some platforms that I initially test and then move away from become more popular and deliver great online visibility results over time so I then come back to them – such as Twitter.com and Posterous.com (both core online communication platforms for me now).

I don’t think it is always about reach – e.g. number of people using YouTube or Twitter. I think it will continue to go back to how effective your message is and is it relevant to your audience. I predict that getting known in a highly targeted niche in 2010 will be ever more important online.

I think eCorpTV.com has some merits as I mentioned in terms of geographical focus when you post your video and if it does build an audience of business people who don’t want to be distracted with other videos or a platform that businesses will allow access to through their firewall, then it is perhaps one to watch in 2010.

Hi Krishna – agree with you 100% on the niche message. It’s getting very easy to get lost in the vastness of the social media space without a strategy to back it up. Thanks for getting back and have a Happy New Year!

My agency worked with the management team at eCorpTV to develop the site. It’s a terrific resource for organizations interested in posting both inward and outward facing messages. Many companies are blocking You Tube in the corporate workplace due some of the inappropriate content. Doesn’t do a lot for your image when the next video after yours is frogs playing ice hockey.

    eCorpTV is about relevancy.

    Happy New Year!

Their site looks fairly small, as you mentioned, the only real advantage being the lack of a crowded space to promote videos. The traffic would probably be highly targetted but very small.

    Hi Krishna,

Does it let you connect with other sites via its API and/or autoshare settings, in the same way that you can with YouTube or Posterous?

If it does \m then it may be of benefit, ie as a social media distribution device, otherwise it’s too siloed.

    Ivan,

Hi, I am CMO over at eCorpTV.com. Yes, our site has the autoshare functionality of YouTube, plus the ability to control the ads next to your player. We also do not run pre-roll videos before any video.

Any questions about our site, please email or call. ccrafton@ecorptv.com, 800-909-6811.

    Hi Clint,

That sounds great. One last question. How does it differ from say Vimeo? Is it the target audience that’s different or do you have another angle?

i plan to do a write up on our site later so whatever you can add would help. It’s benefits I’m most interested in.

    Ivan

  • http://ecorptv.com chris crafton

    Ivan,

Thanks for your questions. My quick response: Vimeo is only for non-commercial accounts, while eCorpTV.com is ONLY for commercial (business or associations) accounts. This distinction in content also translates to the audiences for the videos…Vimeo is consumer only, while ours may be consumer and b2b. Please feel free to email directly for more info, (ccrafton@ecorptv.com) or visit our site and read the article from The Philadelphia Inquirer.
