NOTE: If you are a blogger based in Ireland and are a parent please be sure to read the special arrangement I have put in place with the event organisers for free tickets – see the bottom of the article.
I recently had the opportunity to meet with Dearbhla Kelly a career counsellor working with teens and young adults and their parents.
We had the opportunity to talk about tips for building confident children and how what we as parents might be saying to them in the current economy could shape their views on future career success – you can see the interview in a forthcoming blog post.
As parents, we have a huge influence over our children’s career choice but as it’s challenging to predict the future of the world of work what guidance should we be giving our children.
I am not yet a parent of teens (my three are aged 8 and under though sometimes I think they think they are teens!) and yet I do know from my friends that those teenage years are challenging. Dearbhla was telling me that in conversations she has been having with parents, the future reintroduction of third level fees in Ireland many parents are wondering how to plan for their child’s future.
Dearbhla has joined forces with Horizon Speakers (disclosure – I know both Ian Lawlor and Ria Lawlor of Horizon Speakers) and they have developed an evening workshop for parents which will take place on 3 June 2009 at 7pm in the Science Gallery.
The agenda for the evening will cover:
- Tools to help motivate, encourage and inspire your teenager, even if they are not that focused
- Tips on how to help your teenager them discover their talent, strengths, passions and interests
- Provide you with practical tips to help your child uncover a wining career plan
- Share the steps you and your teenager can take to maximise their future employability prospects
- Give guidance on how to financially plan ahead for your child’s education
- Enable you as a parent to feel more informed, confident and equipped to manage this important stage of your role as a parent.
You can book your ticket – just €25 per person or €30 for couples to attend – book your place here.
