Is email marketing dead? Facebook doesn’t think so!

Facebook Like and Send ButtonsEarlier this week, Facebook announced that they have now made available the “Send button” as a social plugin that websites can use to let people send a link to a friend through Facebook Messages, post it to a Group, or email it to an individual.

For example you can see that in the US, 1-800-Flowers.com have added the code to their site so you can now send a message to someone in your network or your family about what you have been reviewing.

I always recommend that you enable an email ‘send to a friend’ button on your website – given the popularity of Facebook we should also be considering adding the Facebook ‘Send’ button to our web site or business blog.

Facebook has enabled us to add the Facebook Like and Send button using this code or just the Send button on it’s own using this code. In the forthcoming days we will also be able to access analytics by ensuring that you claim your domain.

The Send button drives traffic by letting users send a link and a short message to your selected contacts by email, friends on Facebook, or Groups on Facebook.

Mashable also reported that when someone clicks on the “Send2 button, it counts toward the total number of “Likes” a Facebook Page has – the Like total is now calculated by adding the number of Likes, shares, comments and inbox messages containing a URL.

Don’t forget that you can also add the Facebook Send button to your custom Pages in Facebook if you are using iFrames – so people will be able to send your content from Facebook to their network which will be especially helpful if you integrate it into your Facebook promotion and competitions applications giving you the opportunity to build a greater Fan community. Wildfireapp.com have already announced that they will be adding the Send button to their applications. (I’ve subsequently found out after writing this article that Involver have also announced they are working on integrating the Send button into their apps.)

There is a helpful article on HyperArts that covers some of the limitations of the Facebook Send Button including the following:

- The Send Button only works with XFBML version of the Like Button; it doesn’t workwith the iFrame version of the Like Button

- You can link to other websites and Fan Pages but you can’t link to a specific tab on a Fan Page

- If you enter an email address for the message recipient, you can’t specify the subject line for the email

- You can’t use the Send Button if you’re using Facebook as a Page instead of a Personal Profile.

There is an article on WPMU.org blog about how to add the Facebook Send button to your WordPress site. And I have also found four WordPress.org plugins that are available already (I have not had chance to test any of them yet):

Will you be adding the Facebook Send button to your website? What advice do you have for others if you have already tested the Facebook Send button?
